Madge Schilling Tregone

Madge Tregone, 101, died Saturday, October 12, 2013. A Marietta, Georgia native, Mrs. Tregone was the daughter of Mary Allen Henderson and Walter Edward Schilling. Her Marietta family history extends back to the 1800s. Mrs. Tregone was a longtime member of St. James Episcopal Church in Marietta, where she taught Sunday School for 15 years and later wed there. A graduate of Marietta High School in 1929, she became the bookkeeper for several years at the Schilling Hardware Store on the Marietta Square. An accomplished artist, she took art classes at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and became a charter member of the museum. She was a volunteer worker with the Marietta Red Cross and member of the Marietta Garden Club. She married Alec Tregone of Monroe, Georgia in 1940. After he was sent overseas as a Naval Officer in 1943, she worked at Bell Aircraft in Marietta in “Accounts Payable”. After his return, the couple moved to Annandale, VA, where he worked for the Veteran’s Administration in Washington, D.C. for twenty years. Mrs. Tregone produced many treasured oil paintings and water colors for her family and friends. In 1963, one of her oil landscapes hung in the foyer of the National Gallery of Art in their last local art exhibit. She and her husband traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad. They moved back in Marietta in 1978 for their retirement years. Their last residence was Atherton Place in Marietta. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 70 years, Alec Tregone, her father, Walter Edward Schilling, former postmaster of Marietta, and her mother, Mary Allen Schilling. Her grandfather was C.E. Henderson, builder of the first courthouse on the Square. Her family included the Rev. Charles Schilling, a former Canon of St. Phillips Cathedral of Atlanta, her sisters, Connie Henderson of Plant City, FL and Betty Dudley of McLean, VA. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Johnson and Claire Tregone of Marietta, her son-in-law, Al Johnson, and many nephews and nieces. A private Graveside Service will be held.
