Margaret P. Bailey

Beloved Margaret Elizabeth Pennington Bailey departed this earth for heaven on October 10, 2017 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She moved to Atherton Place Marietta, Georgia in 2014 where she died peacefully at the age of 91. Margaret is survived by her husband of 67 years, Eugene Samuel Bailey Jr. also of Atherton Place, her sister Marilouise Pennington Moore of Parkville, Maryland, three children, five grandchildren and a great grandson; Eugene Stuart Bailey of Havre de Grace, Maryland; Daniel Logan and Julie Bancel Bailey, grandchildren Jennifer Elizabeth and Logan Joseph of Snohomish, Washington; Eleanor Bailey and John Daniel Knox III, granddaughter Margaret Rose Knox Jones and Andrew Michael Jones, great grandson Knox Martin Jones, grandsons John Daniel and Graham Samuel of Marietta, Georgia; as well as nieces and nephews. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Marietta. Margaret was born September 21, 1926 in Seattle, Washington to Samuel Hulett and Margaret Kriel Pennington, and was the youngest of two daughters. Her family moved from Seattle to Tacoma, Washington and then returned to Baltimore, Maryland in 1937. Margaret graduated from Eastern High School in 1944 and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Towson State University in 1948. She taught for 2 years at Arlington Elementary School. In 1969, she taught briefly at Woodholme Elementary School and then for 15 years at St. Paul’s School for Boys, all in the Baltimore vicinity. Margaret and Eugene married on June 24, 1950 at Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church – Park Ave in Baltimore, Maryland settling in Richmond, Virginia where they joined the Presbyterian Church. After several moves in the Fredericksburg/Richmond, Virginia area, a job change in 1956 returned the family to Baltimore. While there, they lived and raised their children in several areas of Towson. In 1972 they purchased a lakeshore cottage in Ontario, Canada for family summer vacations. On retirement in 1985, they moved to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and in 2005 to Marietta, Georgia. As lifelong Christians and members of Presbyterian Churches in all of the places they lived, they faithfully volunteered their time and talents, also supporting various Presbyterian missions. Margaret loved to cook, entertain, golf, sew, knit, quilt, play bridge and completed crossword puzzles daily. She was a vivacious reader and enjoyed traveling worldwide with Eugene during their retirement. Above all else she intensely loved her family and was extremely proud of their accomplishments. It was her goal to instill values of a strong family and a good education in her family, to which she was extremely dedicated. A memorial service will be held in the Atherton Place Community Room on October 28, 2017 at 11am. A family interment service will be held at Dillsburg Cemetery in Dillsburg, Pennsylvania at a later date.
