Mark W. Bennett

Mark W. Bennett born May 23, 1934 graduated to heaven on August 17, 2017. Mark was born in Pickens County, Georgia and moved to Cartersville, Georgia after the 2nd grade. He faithfully returned to his roots in Pickens County, as long as his earthly body allowed, attending church at Jerusalem, going to reunions and tending to the graves of his parents, grandparents, brother and aunt. Mark accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior as a teenager at Jerusalem and was baptized in a local creek. Mark graduated from Cartersville High School in 1953 in the first graduating class from the current high school building. Until his passing, he remained close to the members of his graduating class. He attended Georgia Tech, then served in the Army and completed his formal education at Southern Tech where he graduated with highest honor. In 1970, Mark, along with his wife and daughter, moved to Marietta, so he and his wife could be closer to their respective jobs. Mark worked and then retired after 25 years of service from Western Electric, AT&T and Lucent Technologies. At the time of his death, Mark was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Cartersville, GA. Mark especially enjoyed the outdoors. He loved to hunt but more than the actual hunting he enjoyed the time and fellowship on numerous hunting trips (both local and in the western U.S.) with his hunting buddies and Loel, his oldest brother. Mark was very patriotic and loved the Boy Scouts, the military, his country and our country’s flag. Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Wilburn and Stella Bennett, brothers, Loel and Glen Bennett, and sister, Ruth Harvey. Left to cherish the memory of this quiet and gentle giant, are his devoted, adored and much-loved wife of more than 58 years Sue, devoted daughter Marla (husband, David Litz) and precious and loved granddaughters Christy and Megan, all of Marietta, GA. Mark is also survived by special nieces Lisa Henshaw Wallace of Winchester, TN and “girlfriend” Annelle Brown Mathis, sisters and brothers-in-laws, Jean and Urby Tatum, Hugh and Marie Wilson and Geraldine Holmes, all of Cartersville, GA along with other extended family members and friends. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at 3 PM at Mayes-Ward Dobbins Funeral Home, 180 Church Street, Marietta, GA 30060. The family will receive visitors prior to the service at 1 PM.
