Martha McMichael Chastain

Martha McMichael Chastain, who lived a long and blessed life, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2024, four weeks prior to her 90th birthday. Mrs. Chastain was born June 21, 1934 in Newnan, GA, to the late Ottice McMichael and Mattie McMichael. She graduated from Newnan High School in 1952 and went on to graduate from Greenleaf Business School of Atlanta. After completing business school, she worked at Lockheed and then for the FDIC. While working at Lockheed she met the love of her life Howard Felton Chastain, Jr. They were married for 59 years until his passing in March 2017. After the birth of their two children, she decided on a life dedicated to caring for her family. Outside of the family she was a longtime member of the Cobb EMC Women’s Task Force serving as President from 1993-1995 and was awarded Member of the Year in 1991. She was a member of the Marietta Garden Club serving as President from 1996-1997. Mrs. Chastain was also a longtime member of the Cheatham Hill Homemakers Club. She was a faithful reader of her Bible and a member of First Baptist Church Woodstock. Mrs. Chastain enjoyed traveling with her husband including visiting all 50 states. As members of the Marietta Sister City program, they hosted in their home guest of Marietta’s sister city, Linz Germany, and also traveled to Linz, Germany as part of the program. Mrs. Chastain is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Dennis Debes; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Janice Chastain; three grandchildren, Melissa Stephens (husband Luke); Matthew Debes (wife Maggie); Kaitlyn Chastain; four great-grandchildren, Gracie Stephens, Gabriel Stephens, twins Beaux and Jeauxli Debes, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings Russell McMichael, Doris Howard, Sara Williams, David McMichael and Frank McMichael. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the caregivers, nurses, doctors and staff at The Terraces at Peachtree Hills Place for their excellent care and support. A service to celebrate the life of Martha McMichael Chastain will be held on Sunday June 30, 2024 at 2:00 p.m., Mayes-Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home, Historic Marietta Chapel, 180 Church Street, Marietta, GA 30060. A reception will follow the service. A private graveside service was held on Sunday, May 26, 2024 at Cheatham Hill Memorial Park, Marietta, GA.
