Martha McLemore Scott

Martha Ann McLemore Scott, age 95, passed away on August 28, 2024 at Greenwood Place Assisted Living and Memory Care. She and her twin sister, Mary, were the only girls in a family of 7 children born to Hilton Leonard and Velva Thomason McLemore. She and Mary were born on February 3, 1929 in Marietta, Georgia, always taking pride in being a “native Mariettan.” She was a young girl and a teenager during World War II. Her four older brothers were in the war, and she well remembered rations of sugar, nylons and gas. She remembered the day the war was declared over, and with her parents, Mary and little brother Adrian, taking a streetcar to Atlanta to celebrate. Martha graduated from Marietta High School in 1946. In her early adult years, she worked for the city of Marietta, collecting money for residents’ light bills. She was a life-long member of Marietta First Baptist Church, participating in WMU, Vacation Bible School, teaching Sunday School to teenage girls, Pastor Search Committee, and until Ann was born, a member of the choir. She also taught GA’s, Training Union, and was a choir mother for children’s choir. She met her beloved Don in the choir, when he came to Marietta from Viriginia to work at Lockheed as an electrical engineer. She and Don married on June 24, 1956 in the chapel at Marietta First Baptist, where she had accepted Christ and been baptized in 1941. Martha stayed home with Ann and Mary Ellen until they were both in school. She then embarked on a 24 year career as the secretary of Due West Elementary School. She loved her job, the Due West staff, and the Due West families. After her retirement from Due West, she began volunteering at Kennestone Hospital, and continued for 33 years, working up until 3 days before the beginning of her illness and hospitalizations. Also, during her retirement years, Martha was an active member of her garden club, and volunteered to answer the phone at the church. She could also be seen greeting at the sanctuary door for funerals at the church. She often greeted at the Welcome Center desk, and for many years signed up new members when they came forward during the end of each service. Martha was in charge everywhere she went and in everything she did. You never had to wonder what Martha thought about you or anyone else. Anytime there was a need, she sprang into action, doing what needed to be done. Martha was a force, and beloved to all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald Hobart Scott, Jr, her parents, her sister Mary Rogers, and her brothers, B.F., Bill, Milton, Shorty, and Adrian McLemore. Survivors include her daughters Ann Hicks and husband Chuck, Mary Ellen May and husband Steven, grandchildren Ellen Ward and husband Stephen, Scott May and wife Krista, Virginia DeAngelus and husband Jacob, Sam May and wife Shannon. Step-grandchildren include Beth Hicks, Brian Hicks and wife Suzie, great-grandchildren Micah and Owen Ward, and step-great grandchildren Jameson, Graham and Mia Hicks. Family and friends are cordially invited to a visitation on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of Marietta First Baptist Church. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 2:00 p.m. Donations can be made to Marietta First Baptist building fund.
