Pellie Manning

Our loss is Heaven’s gain. On June 17th 2023, Pellie Jones Manning of Marietta, Georgia, was called home to be with Jesus. Born on May 24, 1922, in LaGrange, Georgia, she was the youngest of seven born to the late Mamie and Chesley Jones. A graduate of LaGrange College, Pellie taught school for a few years before beginning a career at Sears-Roebuck in Atlanta (now Ponce City Market). At that time, she met her future husband, Dr. James H. Manning. They were married on April 14, 1951. Together they raised three amazing children in their beloved community of Marietta. Pellie was a strong, Southern Christian who was able to keep an elegant home, rear her children, serve her Lord and community. Her Sunday dinners were infamous. Her chocolate and lemon cake recipes will live on. She loved gardening and playing bridge. But above all else, she loved her family and Jesus. She served as President of the Women's Auxiliary of the Medical Association of Georgia in 1968. She also served as President of the LaGrange College Alumni Association in 1978 and joined the Board of Trustees of the college in 1979. She was a loyal friend. Most of all, she will always be remembered for her iconic red hair and her fondness for an occasional Bourbon. Left to cherish her memories are: a son, Benjamin Manning (Pamela); nine grandchildren, Josie Manning-Sines (Shawn), Jacob Isaac-Lowry (Sarah), Ali Gilbert (Drew), Marshal Williams, Heather Bode (Ryan), Ben Manning (Lindsey), Will Manning (Sarah), Macy Brown (Dalten), Marielle McElmurray (Will); fifteen great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. James H. Manning; daughter, Sally Manning-Lowry, and son, Scott Manning. Visitation will be held at Mayes-Ward Funeral Home in Marietta on Thursday, June 22, 2023 from 5-7 p.m. Julie Boone, of Marietta First United Methodist Church, will officiate the funeral on Friday, June 23, 2023 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery in Alpharetta. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to LaGrange College, 601 Broad Street, LaGrange, Georgia, 30240.
