Phillip J. Maloney

Phillip John Maloney of Marietta, Georgia passed away peacefully on Wednesday August 27, 2014 after a long illness and battle with cancer. He took his illness in stride, never complained, and lived completely until he died in hospice under the care of his family, the order of Hawthorne Dominican Sisters, and the lay staff. For the dedication and love of the Sisters, Chaplain Fr. Paul Burke, and the noble lay staff members, the family will always be grateful. The family has planned a visitation from 4:00PM to 6:00PM at Mayes Ward Funeral Home in Marietta, Georgia on Sunday, August 31st followed by a Rosary in the Mayes Ward Chapel on Church Street. The funeral will be on Monday, September 1st at 10:00AM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at 87 Lacy Street, Marietta, Georgia. The Mass will be presided over by Fr. Paul Burke. Interment will be held 3:00 p.m. Monday at Honey Creek Woodlands Cemetery in Conyers, Georgia. Phillip Maloney was born on June 25th, 1955 at Kennestone Hospital, Marietta, Georgia, the fourth child and third son of Charles William (Bill) and Dorothy Ann Maloney. After Phillip was born, his parents carried on their desire for a large family by having three more daughters and one more son thus giving Phillip the chance to be an older brother to his younger siblings. He enjoyed that role and was known for giving the best presents at Christmas. When names were drawn, you always wanted Phillip to get your name. Phillip attended St. Joseph Elementary School, graduated from Marietta High School in 1973, and attended Kennesaw State University (College at that time). He enjoyed a long career with the United States Postal Service and loved and enjoyed his daily rounds, conversations with his postal patrons, and the street level view the career of a mail carrier gave him. He took that pride of citizenship to the next level by running for the Marietta City Council on two occasions. In addition, he was elected to the Civil Service Board, a duty he performed with pride. He was proud of the impact his participation made, as was his entire family. As a noted commentator, speaker, and writer, he could and did communicate his views in a dry-witted and humorous manner enjoyed by his many friends. Our dear Philly Dilly is survived by his wife Julia, son William Benjamin, and daughters Hannah Elizabeth and Julia Clare and last but not least, their faithful canine companion, Iago. In addition, Phil is survived by his many brothers and sisters, their spouses, numerous nephews and nieces, and countless cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Dot Maloney, and his beloved brother, Matthew.
