Raymond Cash

Raymond Moore Cash, 78, of Ball Ground, GA, died Sunday, December 28, 2008. Service will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home Chapel in Marietta, with Rev. Luther Washington officiating. Interment will be in Crest Lawn Memorial Park, Atlanta. Raymond M. Cash graduated in 1954 from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Mr. Cash’s work career began in 1950 with APAC Construction Company of Georgia (formerly MacDougald Construction Company) where he retired in 1984 after rising to the position of Vice President. Mr. Cash formed R.M. Cash and Sons, Inc. in the late 1970s. In 1984 he started the Bolton Road Landfill in Atlanta, Georgia serving Metro Atlanta’s solid waste needs. In 1991, he placed this company with Sanifill, Inc. as part of an IPO (Initial Public Offering). He served as Director. Subsequent to the Sanifill IPO, Mr. Cash formed Southern States Environmental Services, Inc., in 1991. As Chairman and CEO, he built the largest Subtitle D landfill in the Southeastern United States. This landfill is located in Taylor County, Georgia and is supplied by a network of transfer stations. Southern States merged with Allied Waste Industries, Inc. in April 1994. In 1994, Mr. Cash started Resource Recovery Transfer and Transportation, Inc. Acting as Chairman, he built a diversified waste hauling and landfill company in Alabama. Resource Recovery merged with Superior Services, Inc. in 1997. Mr. Cash’s entrepreneurial spirit continued as he started another closely-held family business, Triple Horseshoe, Inc., which is comprised of various agricultural and commercial land holdings. The Raymond M. Cash Foundation was founded in 1996 by Mr. Cash as a means of giving financial support to charitable organizations in this community particularly supporting his passion for restoration of historical building structures. Within the past two years, Mr. Cash started the Whitestone Valley C & D Landfill located in Talking Rock, Georgia to service the North Metro Atlanta area. Mr. Cash enjoyed spending time with his family, particularly his Alaska fishing trips, farming and participating in various restoration projects throughout the Southeastern United States. Mr. Cash travelled extensively around the world with the most recent trip being to South Africa with family. Mr. Cash is survived by his wife, Karen Cash; three daughters, Fredna C. Woodall of Smyrna, Rachel C. Roper of Ball Ground, Stacie Metcalfe of Vinings; two sons, Dwight Cash of Ball Ground, Eric Cash of Smyrna; one sister, Anita Causey of Cartersville; fourteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two stepsons, Steven Maxwell of Maryville, TN, Timothy Maxwell of Madisonville, TN; several nieces and nephews. Contributions may be made to Raymond M. Cash Scholarship Fund, Fernbank Museum, 767 Clifton Rd. NE, Atlanta, GA 30307. The family will receive friends 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.
