Rebecca "Becky" Webster Dykes

Loving wife, mother and grandmother, Rebecca Webster “Becky” Dykes, of Marietta, died Thursday, September 23, 2010. She was 89. Born in Greensboro, NC, Becky moved with her family to Savannah at an early age. She was the daughter of Joe A. Webster and Boyd Lowrey Webster and was educated in the public schools of Savannah, graduating from Armstrong Junior College. It was in Savannah that Becky first met William E. Dykes, Sr., and they were married in 1946 soon after he returned from World War II, where he had been in the advance team for the U.S. Third Army under the direction of General George Patton. After the war Becky worked for C&S Bank in Atlanta while her husband completed his education at Georgia Tech. They moved to Marietta in 1950 to raise their sons, Bill, Jr. and Mike, and become active members of the community. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Marietta and was active as a Cub Scout leader and in the PTA organizations of Westside School, Hickory Hills and Marietta High School, where both sons were linemen in the Blue Devil football program. An avid bridge player, Becky developed many close lifetime friendships in her bridge circles. Motivated from her sons’ friendship with their neighbor Hank Shepherd, Becky and other mothers were instrumental in forming The Creswell School, a volunteer organization of the Marietta Junior League to help children with special needs. Becky and Bill moved to Albany in 1975 when Bill purchased Peerless Manufacturing Company in Shellman and they became an integral part of the Albany community. After retirement they returned to Marietta in 2005 and were blessed with countless new friends from among their neighbors in The Commons neighborhood. Becky enjoyed a close and meaningful relationship with her granddaughters, Emily Dykes Goolsby and her husband, Jon Goolsby of Houston, TX, and Molly Dykes Scarbrough and her husband, Brandon Scarbrough of Marietta; and her grandsons, Michael McCormack “Mackey” Dykes, William E. Dykes, III and Mark Webster Dykes, of Albany. She delighted in the births of her great-grandsons, Will Goolsby and Webb Scarbrough. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, William E. Dykes, Sr.; her daughter-in-law and son, Meredith and William E. Dykes, Jr. of Marietta; her son, Michael L. Dykes of Albany; a brother, Charles Webster of Savannah; as well as her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Ann Webster Boardman of Monument, CO; and a brother, Joe Webster of Savannah. The family would like to thank Nancy Wrosch who was Becky’s faithful caregiver and constant companion for the past five years. Graveside services will be private. A memorial service will be held Sunday, September 26 at 5:00 p.m. at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home with Jon Goolsby and Brandon Scarbrough officiating, followed by an opportunity to speak to family members.
