Robert Clarence Wagner

Robert C. Wagner, 94, of Marietta died Thursday, August 5, 2010. He was born October 30, 1915 at Rye Cove, Virginia to the late Charles M. Wagner and Louesa Griffin Wagner. Mr. Wagner’s education included Rye Cove (VA) High School, The Armed Forces Institute and the Army’s The Adjutant General’s School, Fort Washington, Maryland. He joined the military service December 22, 1936 serving eleven years in the Army Air Corps and additional eleven years in the United States Air Force after it separated from the Army. He served two years special duty with the U.S. Navy at the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia attaining Chief Warrant Officer Rank. He served in Foreign Service during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Wagner was selected to serve two tours of duty at Headquarters of the Air Force at the Pentagon in Washington, first as Assistant Adjutant General, then as Assistant for Congressional Liaison working with the House and Senate appropriations committees on appropriations for funding of the U.S. Air Force. He served as Base Adjutant at Dobbins Air Force Base, Marietta, GA; he and his family settled in Marietta. After his military retirement he was in business in Johnson City, TN and Marietta, GA before joining the administrative staff of Atlanta Public School System for 13 years. Social and professional activities included: Vice President of Sprayberry High School Boosters Club, Civitan Club, Lions Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Military Officers Association of America, Georgia Retired Educators Association, a member of First Methodist Church where he was a visiting stewart, Administrative Board member, usher/usher captain for 40 years. Survivors include his wife, Marguerite Hornbeck Wagner; one daughter, Nancy Wagner McMillon of Greenville, SC; two sons, Robert Charles Wagner and his wife, Elizabeth of Atlanta, Larry J. Wagner and his wife, Patti Jo of Loganville, GA; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Lillie Belle Adams of Amherstdale, WV, Phoebe M. Sakay of Kingsport, TN.
