Ruth Scarr Inglis

Ruth Scarr Inglis, born Ruth Laird Scarr in Hackensack, NJ, died Tuesday, December 6 at Sunrise at Huntcliff Summit in Sandy Springs, GA. A Memorial Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, December 10, at 11:00 a.m. with reception following. Visitation will be held Friday 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the home of Joye Solomon. Please call 706-969-3062 for directions. She was born on Easter Sunday, April 20, 1924, to Mildred C. Scarr and Francis J. Scarr, Ruth grew up between 2 brothers, James B. Scarr (deceased) and Francis J. Scarr (deceased). A family move to Saint Louis, MO introduced her to husband-to-be, Ervine Peter Inglis, Jr., Washington University medical student. She transferred from Hood College, Frederick, MD, to Washington University after their wedding in Marietta, GA at the First Presbyterian Church in June 1945. After 2 years with the USAF in Japan, Ruth and Pete raised three children in Marietta, Stephen Peter, Joye Inglis Solomon and Jennifer Ruth, where Pete practiced general medicine for 38 years. Ruth and Pete lived in Demorest, GA for 4 years before returning to the metropolitan area in 2006. Early schooling in New Jersey and at the Northfield-Mount Hermon School in Mount Hermon, MA, and a degree in English and Sociology from Washington University prepared Ruth well for her love of literature and writing, with eventual focus on poetry and memoir writing. Ruth’s book of poetry, Gifts form the Heart: A Poetry Journey was published by SoloFlight Design in 2001. Ruth’s love of books and words was reflected in her employment, volunteer and social activities. Through the years she was involved with, or employed by, the Cobb County Library System, community and church theatre groups, the Junior League of Cobb County, the journal VOICES, the Honey Suckle Garden Club, the Cobb County Medical Auxiliary, First Presbyterian Church, poetry, writing and Shakespeare groups, the Georgia Poetry Society, the Cobb County Youth Museum, Camp Juliette Low (Cloudland, GA), Koinonia Farms (Americus, GA), among others. Ruth is survived by E. Peter Inglis, Stephen P. Inglis of Grand Junction, CO, Joye I. Solomon of Atlanta and Jennifer R. Inglis of Cleveland, GA and grandchildren: Katherine Laurel Inglis, Hannah Rose Pilkington Baker, Miriam Ellen Rose Baker, Lucinda Jane Foley, Ryan Rabel Foley, Foster Jordan Solomon, Blake Addison Solomon, McKenzie Bay Solomon. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Cobb County Library System, First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, and Nacoochee Presbyterian Church, Sautee, GA.
