Sidney Clotfelter

Robert Sidney Clotfelter, 98, of Marieta, died March 31, 2012. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 3, at First Presbyterian Church, Marietta, with Rev. John Wells officiating. The second youngest of five children, Mr. Clotfelter was born in Fulton County on September 14, 1913, son of the late Charles Thomas Clotfelter and Era Northcutt Clotfelter. He raised his family and spent most of his life here in Marietta at the homeplace on Powder Springs Road. He graduated from Marietta High School in 1932, attended business college, and spent two years at Georgia Tech, where he majored in engineering. He served in the Army as an officer in the Corps of Engineers during World War II. He later entered the construction business where he was self-employed for over forty years. He developed and operated a number of businesses including Westside Shopping Center, Pine Haven Mobile Home Park, Clotfelter Pool Company, and a grading and construction company. Mr. Clotfelter was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church for 84 years and served as a Deacon and head of the Property Committee for over 20 years. He was a charter member of the Kennesaw College Foundation and active in the Marietta Rotary Club for 61 years, and served as President. He was instrumental in the formation of 3 additional Rotary Clubs. Mr. Clotfelter received the Marietta High School Distinguished Alumni Award. Sidney’s sense of humor, energy, and love for life showed in his generosity to his family and community. He enjoyed golf during most of his 50 years as a member of the Marietta Country Club. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Mike and Mary Beth Clotfelter; Alicia and Jim Willoughby; Cindy and Roger Rozen; and Nancy Hildreth; three stepchildren and their spouses, Donna and Edmund Soloman; Cathy and Nelson Chastain; and Bob Wade; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 33 years, Barbara Porter Clotfelter. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Marietta; Turnip Town Baptist Church, Turnip Town Road, Ellijay, GA 30540; Kennesaw State University Foundation; Rotary Club of Marietta Foundation; or the Scholarship Fund at Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, GA.
