Steven F. Furlong

Steven F. Furlong, of Powder Springs, Georgia, passed away on January 5, 2026 at the age of 82. Steve had fought cancer for more than two decades. He was born in Miami, Fl to Waldo “Pete” and Ruby Furlong. He has one younger sister, Bonny Jacobi of Florida. He married Janice, his high school sweetheart, and they celebrated 61 years this past December. Shortly after the wedding, Steve and Janice moved to Atlanta for Steve’s work as a carpenter for an independent contractor. During this time, Steve learned many skills that would benefit him and his family. Then he got a job with Georgia Power in the Forestry Department and moved his way up from forester to field estimator. Additionally, he also ran logistics for several storm teams across several states for the Southern Company. He retired in 2001. After Steve retired, he was able to continue using his storm skills by volunteering with the Red Cross after Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. Steve and Janice were founding members of Redeemer Orthodox Church in 1967 where he helped build the sanctuary and served as a deacon. In 1977, they moved to Powder Springs and transferred to Midway Presbyterian Church. There he served as a deacon for many years and helped with VBS, Reformation Days, and went on many mission trips. In 2022, they moved to Grace Covenant PCA Church to worship with their daughters and families. His many talents included swimming, waterskiing, white water rafting, canoeing, camping, fishing, splitting firewood, gardening, and making stuff out of whatever he had on hand. Steve was a dedicated DIY’er. He and Janice completely remodeled their 120+ year old home over the course of 40 years. He loved to salvage materials and customize projects to exact needs and to be as functional as possible. He loved to plan projects. Over the years, he passed his skills to multiple generations. Steve set a fine example of how to work hard and to work “smart”. And to always work in the shade. Steve is survived by his loving wife; Janice E. Furlong, his daughters; Andrea Baxter (Ray) and Lois Barday (Rusty), his sister; Bonny Jacobi, his grandchildren; Michael Baxter, Matthew Barday (Marilyn), Jeffrey Baxter (Emily), Jess Barday, his great-grandchildren; Holden Barday, Eloise Baxter, Madelyn Barday, and Abigail Baxter, and nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Funeral Services for Mr. Furlong will be held at the Macland Chapel of Mayes Ward Dobbins on Saturday, January 10th. Visitation will be held from 10am to 12 noon and the service at noon. Graveside service and interment will be at Midway Presbyterian Church on Dallas Hwy. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Paulding Pregnancy Center in Hiram, GA.
