Susanne Meyer Whitmer

Susanne Meyer Whitmer of Kennesaw, GA, lost her long fight against cancer at home, on September 26, surrounded by her loving family. She was 69 years old. She was born on March 22, 1946 in Middletown, NY and graduated from Minisink Valley High School in 1963. She received her R.N. from Community General Hospital (Syracuse, NY), her Master’s Degree in Education from FAU, and her Doctorate (N.D.) in holistic medicine from Trinity School of Natural Health. Susanne loved life and approached it with vigor, enthusiasm and joy in all that she did and she gave her whole heart to everyone she knew. She stood with strength and will against her illness. Susanne’s life was one of deep Christian faith and dedication in service to community and others. Throughout her childhood she was an active Girl Scout and a member of her Youth Fellowship in the Methodist Church in Middletown. In her nursing career, Susanne’s primary focus was as an operating room nurse and she was committed to AORN (Assn of periOperative Registered Nurses) and remained so even after her retirement. One of her joys was attending the annual conference every year with her AORN friends. In the spirit of ongoing service, Susanne unceasingly engaged in volunteer work, including Kennestone Hospital, Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, Library Archives at the Kennesaw Southern Museum, Ostrander Family Association and membership in the DAR. Always interested in the community in which she lived, Susanne was active in the Kennesaw Historical Preservation Commission and worked tirelessly to further this cause. In 2014, she was awarded the Key to the City from the Mayor of Kennesaw in recognition of her service. Susanne was bound by her devotion to her family, including her large extended family. She is survived by her husband, Jon Whitmer of Kennesaw, GA, her daughter Jill Johnson (Adam) of Pensacola, FL, and her daughter Rebecca Sponholtz (Corbin) of Gainesville, FL. She adored her five grandchildren, Parker, Amelia, Ida, Landon, and Chandlee. She is also survived by her sister Nancy Meyer of Doylestown, PA, her brother, Harry Meyer of Gainesville, FL, and her brother Timothy Meyer of Houston, TX. Surviving also are her sister-in-law Judy Whitmer Rew (Howard) of Huntsville, AL, as well as 2 maternal aunts (Helen Ostrander of Middletown, NY and Mildred Ostrander of Philadelphia). There are 6 nieces and nephews (Ashley, Leslie, Sarah, Tim, Christopher and Chauna) all of whom Susanne had a continuing relationship with. Susanne is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Jennie Meyer, originally from Middletown, NY. The memorial service will take place on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. at Kennesaw United Methodist Church, 1801 Ben King Rd, Kennesaw, GA.
