Thomas H. "Tommy" Brown

Thomas H. “Tommy Brown, 80, of Marietta, Ga. died Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at his home. Tommy was born on January 25, 1930 in Kennesaw, Ga. to the late John Doyle and Maud Brown. He loved Cobb County more than any other place on earth, and with two brief exceptions – once during his military service in the Korean war and years later when he decided to try his hand at a little ranching near Cartersville – Tommy lived in Cobb Co. all of his life. He graduated from Marietta High School in 1948 and went to work for W. P. Stephens Lumber Co. in Marietta. After a few years Tommy realized a great talent for sales, and he decided that he wanted to sell the biggest thing he could. He was hired by Yancey Bros. Caterpillar dealership in Atlanta, and a long, successful career of heavy equipment sales was launched. He transferred to a sales position at the Midco Southern Terex dealership in Marietta and finished his career there as Sales Manager. Always interested in both public service and politics, Mr. Brown was elected to the Cobb County Board of Commissioners in 1964 where he served until 1978. He also served on the Board of Directors of Kennestone Hospital and the Board of Directors of Chattahoochee Technical Institute. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, and he was active in the Lion’s Club and the Kiwanis Club. He was an active member of McEachern United Methodist Church in Powder Springs, GA. Mr. Brown is survived by his wife of 31 years, Ann Land Brown of Marietta; his daughter, Stephan Allice Cantor, and her husband, Howard Cantor, of West Glover, Vt.; his grandsons, Cavan Meese, Noah Meese, and Max Cantor; his stepdaughter, Susan Wright, her husband, Cliff Wright, and their daughter, Ashley; his stepdaughter, Stephanie Land; his stepdaughter, Sherry Sallinger, and her daughters, Jessica and Megann; his stepson, Jeff Land, and his children, Bobby, Erica, and Haley; a brother, C. Jack Brown, and his wife, Judy, and four sisters, Sara Brown Benson, Sue Brown Chapman, Shirley Brown Miller and her husband, Don, and Linda Brown New and her husband, David. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Monday, Feb. 1, 2010 at 2:00 at McEachern Memorial Methodist Church in Powder Springs, GA. Burial will follow at Cheatham Hill Memorial Cemetery in Marietta. The family will receive friends from 2-5pm on Sunday, Jan. 31, at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta.
