David Eston Mahan

David Eston Mahan, 79, of Marietta passed away on October 7th, 2024. He was known and beloved for his endless desire to serve his country and community through his extensive and tireless volunteer work. He was born on January 1st, 1945 in New York, New York to John Clifford and Anna Lee Mahan. He grew up in Flushing, New York, and graduated from Flushing High School in 1962. He attended and graduated from Shorter College where he met his wife Marcelle Branch, they married on August 21st, 1966. David worked as an auditor for the FDIC until he joined the United States Army from 1967 to 1969, during which he was stationed in Germany and obtained a life-long love for traveling the world. Following his military service, he and Marcelle settled in Marietta, Georgia, and happily welcomed their daughter Marianna into their lives on their third anniversary. With assistance from the G.I. Bill, he was able to continue his education at Georgia State University where he received several Masters degrees. Over the course of his career, David was employed by the FDIC, Lockheed, Marietta Federal, Georgia Federal, Commercial Exchange Bank, and finally retired from the U.S. Department of Labor as a fraud investigator, however; his passion for helping others was reflected in his non-work life. He was an active member and long-time treasurer, deacon, and elder at First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, where he began volunteer work with Presbyterian Disaster Relief and Habitat for Humanity. He helped to organize and participated in numerous volunteer missions throughout the Southeast including disaster relief work in Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina. He not only enjoyed volunteer work through his church, but he also found his true passion and calling in life through his servant’s heart and constantly sought to provide help for anyone who asked around his workplace, neighborhood, family, and community. Later, he became a founding member and treasurer of Marietta Community Church where he continued his volunteer work with Samaritan’s Purse. David was a loving husband to Marcelle, father to Marianna, father-in-law to Hiram, and grandfather to Claire and Emily. He was beloved by and devoted to his family but, above all else, he loved the Lord, seeking to demonstrate this through his never-ending desire and passion to serve his God, his family, and his community. David was preceded in death by his parents John and Anna, and his sister Jean. He is survived by his wife Marcelle, his daughter and son-in-law Marianna and Hiram Carden, and his granddaughters and grandson-in-law Claire Carden, Emily Vernon, and Matthew Vernon, and by his siblings Robert and Carol, and beloved nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Following his burial at the Georgia National Cemetary in Canton, a Memorial Service will be held at Marietta Community Church on Saturday, October 19th at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Marietta Community Church or Samaritan’s Purse in David’s honor.
