Bertha Galt

Bertha Craft Galt, 90, a 27 year resident of Marietta, GA, passed away Thursday evening, January 15th, 2009, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Kinston, NC on April 15th, 1918 to Bettie Jane Kennedy Craft and J.C. Craft. Her family moved to Homestead, Florida in 1920. She attended grade school at Redland Elementary, Junior High, and High School. During the Depression, she worked with her sisters on a WPA project. Later, she moved to the Miami area where she met the love of her life, Lewis Galt. At the time, they were both working for the Florida Power and Light Company. Along with many women of that era, Bertha contributed to her country by driving a large telephone pole truck down tiny dirt roads until Lewis came back from the war. After being introduced by friends, they fell in love and married on March 29, 1947. They raised their family in Southern Florida, moving to Marietta in 1982 after Lewis retired. Bertha devoted her life to the care of those she loved, giving all she had for the comfort and happiness of others. While surrounded by her sister, daughters and granddaughters, and listening to stories of her beloved great-grandchildren, she drew her last breath with grace and dignity to join her dearly departed husband on his birthday. She is survived by her daughters, Linda Lu Best of Marietta, and Patricia Gayle Prentiss of Dallas, TX; sisters Elizabeth Castiglione of Franklin, NC, Ruth Perry of Charlotte, NC, Geraldine Braun of Franklin, NC, Betty Jean Sanderson, of Cary, NC; grandchildren, Paige Elizabeth Prentiss Coulman, Laura Renee Best Duffy, Richard Daniel Best, Kennedy Anne Prentiss, Ashleigh Anne Best, Micheal Brian Prentiss; and great-grandchildren Jack Holt Duffy, Madden Gayle Margaret Coulman, Louisa Jacque-line Prentiss Coulman, Evan Kristopher Duffy, and Samantha Elizabeth Anne Coulman. Family visitation will begin at 2:30pm and the memorial service will follow at 3:30pm Saturday at Saint James Episcopal Church in Marietta with Rev. Charles Nunnally officiating. The family will receive friends for a reception immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, a donation in her name may be sent to the Marietta Chapter of the Boys and Girls Club of Georgia, 529 Manget St. SE, Marietta, GA 30060.
