Brantly M. Callaway

Brantly Mercer Callaway, 92, died peacefully on Monday, July 3, 2017, surrounded by family members. He was the son of the late Brantly Mercer Callaway, III, and Maude Granade Callaway. Mr. Callaway was born in the Granade farmhouse on June 25 of 1925 in Rayle, Wilkes County, Georgia. Baptized at the age of 12 at Jackson Hills Baptist Church, Mr. Callaway was raised in the Inman Park area of Atlanta. A lifelong Baptist, he was a member of Inman Park Baptist Church and Druid Hills Baptist Church. He married the former Ruby Farrice Owens at Druid Hills Baptist Church on June 14, 1952. For the last 63 years Mr. Callaway was a member of Marietta First Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School and served as a Life Deacon. Mr. Callaway graduated from Boys High in Atlanta in 1943. After graduation, he entered the military. He served as a Private First Class in the 157th Army Infantry Battalion during World War II. After returning from military service, he attended Georgia Tech, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. He began his career as a chemist at North Chemical Company. He eventually became plant manager. He was a member of the American Chemical Society for 60 years. He was also a member of the American Association of Textile Chemistry and Colorist and Alpha Kai Sigma Professional Fraternity. Mr. Callaway is survived by Farrice Owens Callaway, his wife of 65 years, as well as his five children: Ansley C. Rice (H. William) of Rome, Georgia; Rev. Brantly Callaway, V (Peggy Williams) of Monroe, Georgia; Bill Callaway (Minh Pham) of Charlotte, North Carolina; Leslie C. Henderson (Bart) of Marietta, Georgia; and Bobby Callaway (Cheryl Robbins) of Seneca, South Carolina. He leaves behind thirteen grandchildren: Will, Brant, Witt, Paul, Molly, Matt, Maggie, Hank, Ellie, Jack, Haley, Carsen, Jacob, and three great grandchildren. Funeral Services for Mr. Callaway will be held at the Chapel of the First Baptist Church in Marietta at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 6th. Interment will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Callaway Family Cemetery, a family burial ground dating back to 1783, in Rayle, Georgia. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, July 5, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Mayes Ward Funeral Home, Historic Marietta Chapel.
