Dorothy Ann Scanlon Maloney

Dorothy Ann Scanlon Maloney, beloved wife for sixty-two years of Charles William (Bill) Maloney, passed away June 16, 2011, in the presence of her family in Marietta, Georgia. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 21, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marietta. Dorothy, or Dot, as her friends and family called her, was born August 29, 1927, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Byron and Margaret Scanlon. Dorothy was one of eleven children born to the Scanlon family of El Dorado, Kansas. Her early education was at St. John’s Parish School and El Dorado High School. After graduating high school in 1944, she attended nursing school and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph Order where she taught fourth grade in Kansas City, Kansas for one year. Upon her departure and return to El Dorado, she met her future husband, Charles William (Bill) Maloney. They were married on January 29, 1949, in El Dorado at St. John’s Catholic Church. Dorothy and Bill’s young family of four moved to Marietta in 1952 where they became parishioner founders and members of St. Joseph Catholic Church and school. As their family grew to nine children, Bill and Dot moved to larger homes until settling in their present home on Chicopee Drive in the city of Marietta. Dorothy’s vocation and interests were devoted mother, family advocate, avid bridge player, and spiritual studies and life. She was admired among family and friends for her eternal optimism, upbeat sense of humor, and independence of thought and spirit. Her survivors include husband, Charles William (Bill) Maloney; nine children: Mark Maloney & wife, Sharon; Matt Maloney & wife, Karen; Mary Chappell & husband, Bob; Phillip Maloney; Betsy Miller & husband, Tommy; Tina O’Shea (husband, Kevin, deceased); Gina Hoffman; Tommy Maloney & wife, Tina; and Nancy Mangiante & husband, Jack; twenty-two grandchildren: Steven & wife, Ally; Brian & wife, Dana, Jay, Jeremy & wife, Lena, Mary Katherine, Christopher, Casey, Joe, Ben, Hannah, Clare, Melissa & husband, Ed, Patrick, Allie, Scotty & wife, Bekah, Carolyn, Margaret Ann, Matthew, Lauren, Sean, Katherine, and Michael; six great-grandchildren: Taylor, Manuel, Sebastion, Cole, Dylan, and Abel; sisters, Patsy Mason and Carol Ward; over one hundred nieces, nephews, great nieces and great-nephews. Dorothy was predeceased by six brothers, Byron, Jr., Larry, Denis, Jim, Bob, and Terry, and two sisters, Margaret Alice and Mary.
