Dr. J. Cecil Toole

Dr. J. Cecil Toole, 85 of Marietta, GA passed away after a short battle with cancer on April 24, 2011. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 27th at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. James Speed officiating. Dr. Toole was born in Aiken, SC and graduated from Aiken High School in 1943. He attended Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, TN, majoring in Biology and Chemistry. In 1944, he was drafted by the US Navy and served as a corpsman aboard the USS Benevolence (AH13) with the Pacific Fleet. Dr. Toole was in Tokyo Bay at the signing of the Surrender with Japan and was part of the contingency that brought back the first American POW’s from the Japanese prison camps. Soon after his Honorable Discharge in 1946, he completed his undergraduate studies at Peabody and enrolled at Emory University School of Medicine. After his graduation from medical school, he was, again, drafted by the US Army and served in the Panama Canal Zone and Walter Reed Army Medical Center. One of the highlights of his medical career was performing an EKG on Admiral Richard Byrd via a ship-to-ship transfer. He once again was Honorably Discharged in 1955 and went into private practice as a General Practitioner in Clayton, GA. After three years of practicing in Clayton, Dr. Toole attended Crawford W. Long Hospital to specialize as an OB/GYN where he met his wife, Carleen and they were married in 1960. Dr. Toole practiced out of Wellstar/Kennestone Hospital delivering thousands of babies in his 35 years of practice. In 1986, he retired from private practice. Two years later, yearning to teach, he secured a position with Emory University as an Assistant Professor in the medical school working out of Grady Hospital for 10 years. He retired again to enjoy his grandkids, the Atlanta Braves, and love for politics. He authored a book about the 16th Amendment which was published in 2010. Dr. Toole had a strong belief to do what was right, even if it was not popular with others. Dr. Toole is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carleen, son Jeff & Robin Toole, daughters, Lori Toole, and Janet & Mark Knautz. Included are five grandchildren, Zach Oliver, Michael and Nicholas Knautz, and Alexis and Ben Toole. In lieu of flowers, it is asked a donation be made to the Good Samaritan Health Center of Cobb, 1605 Roberta Drive, SW, Marietta, GA 30008.
