Geneva Hartness Wallace

Geneva Hartness Wallace, 91, of Marietta, GA went home to be with her LORD and Savior Jesus Christ on April 3, 2013. She is the widow of William C. “Bud” Wallace who died in 1990 after 46 years of marriage. She is survived by three sons –James E. Wallace (Nanci), D William Wallace (Sally), and Ronald D. Wallace (Sue), eight grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Geneva was born in Cartersville, GA on February 21, 1922 and was one of seven children of Arlie and Martha Hartness. She was preceded in death by brothers Oliver Hartness and Ed Hartness and sisters Virginia Sill and Genevieve Rainey. She is survived by a brother Calvin Hartness and a sister Martha Hughes. She also has numerous nieces and nephews. Geneva was an active sportswoman and played for Cartersville High School and the 1941 Georgia State Women’s Softball team coached by her future husband. She also worked at Bell Bomber Plant in Marietta and played on teams there. She helped start the Sewell Park Little League program and along with her husband sponsored many youth baseball teams. She was a fixture at youth sporting events for many years and served in various capacities. She followed her sons across the country playing sports but always found time to help others in many ways. She was a member of Roswell Street Baptist Church for over 60 years and taught children’s Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for several decades. Her current Sunday School class was a priority in her life and she attended until her death. Her church life was one of her main interests and a highlight of her life was a church trip to the Holy Land. Whenever the Senior Citizens group took a trip she was ready. Whether it was a trip to Branson or to the Braves game she was there. Geneva loved her family and always looked forward to visits from grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had them all over for Thanksgiving every year and refused to go to another house for the gathering. Family reunions in Murphy, NC and Peachtree, NC and visits to the family cemetery on an island in the middle of a lake in NC were staples in her life. After owning and operating the Emporium Antique Shop for many years she became the “Flower Lady” who grew acres of daylilies and perennials and supplied many landscape companies and individuals with wonderful flowers. Geneva was a strong lady with an outstanding faith. She looked forward to seeing Jesus face to face and being reunited with her husband and other family and friends. She will be extremely missed by everyone who loved her so dearly. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend and church member. There was no better example of a selfless person who always sought to help in any way. She truly was a Proverbs 31 woman and an inspiration to all. Visitation will be at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home at 180 Church Street in Marietta from 5-7 PM on Friday, April 5, 2013.
