Gillian "Bud" Pearson Haddle

Gillian Pearson Haddle (Bud) passed away on June 15, 2024, in Marietta, Georgia after just recently celebrating his 98th birthday. Bud was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania to William Harry Haddle and Martha Lovina Thomas just in time to celebrate Mother’s Day 1926 and passed just one day shy of being honored on Father’s Day 2024. He is preceded in death by Dorothy Jones Haddle in 2007, his wife and lifelong partner of 51 years; his parents; and his brothers, Ronald R., William M., and Barry D. Haddle. Bud is survived by his sister, Doris Ann Vickroy (Richard); his daughters, Janice M. Davis (Tom Holmes) and Barbara J. Brooks; and his sons, David L. Haddle (Jacquelin Reece), and Gary D. Haddle. He is also survived by those that fondly called him Pop Pop, his grandchildren, Jenny B. Haddle, Joyce D. Merritt, Leann C. Thomas, Thomas B. W. Haddle, Jordan T. Brooks; and many great and great-great grandchildren. Bud served his country in the Navy from 1944 to 1948 as an Electronics Technician and was honorably discharged to complete his education. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees in Mathematics and Physical Science from Pennsylvania State University and worked at the Ordinance Research Lab and also taught mathematics at Penn State for 15 years. The family moved to Marietta, Georgia in 1966 where he worked on the C5-A project for several years at Lockheed Marietta as a research scientist in acoustics. He joined the staff as a Professor at Southern Tech (Southern Technical College) in 1971 and was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus in 1992 after his retirement from teaching mathematics for 20 years. Bud enjoyed gardening every summer to harvest fresh vegetables for mom to cook for the family meals, fishing with his sons and their friends, and reading physics books just for fun. He also spent many hours reading children’s stories to his grandchildren as he and mom modeled to our family how to become responsible, ethical, and independent adults. He and Dorothy never knew a stranger and became honorary parents to many. He set a goal to reach 100 years of age and may have, had a sudden illness not interceded. The family will receive guests at a visitation held at Mayes Ward Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta on Wednesday, June 19th at 3:00 p.m. with a service immediately following at 4:00 p.m. in the Chapel.
