Gladys Lorene Thomas Kirby

Gladys Lorene Thomas Kirby, age 94, of Marietta passed away peacefully on Monday, October 26, 2020 at Wellstar Tranquility at Kennesaw Mountain. She was born on August 14, 1926 in Morganton, GA., to the late Eugene “Gene” Manning Thomas and Mary Ethel Adeline Sullivan Thomas. She was predeceased by her younger brother, Robert Manning Thomas and is survived by her older sister, Regina Thomas Davis. She was married for more than 60 years to the late Robert Lee Kirby and is survived by their two daughters, Pauline Kirby Camp (deceased husband Sid) and Martha Kirby Farrar (husband Ken). They feel blessed beyond measure to have had her example of unconditional love and support to pass on to her four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was an integral part of their lives and so excited about the news of another great-grandchild. Sadly, her life ended before that birth, but her legacy will live on. Apart from family, Gladys chose the nursing profession as a way to serve others. She enrolled in training at age 42 and worked as a nurse for many years at Kennestone Hospital. She was dedicated to her patients and respected by all who worked with her. She truly modeled the pledge, “May my life be devoted to service and to the high ideals of the nursing profession.” In the community, Gladys spent her time at the YWCA of Northwest Georgia, now known as LiveSAFE Resources, helping to process and provide donations of clothing and household items to victims of domestic abuse. She was recognized with multiple certificates of appreciation by that organization for providing years of “Outstanding Volunteer Services.” She was a member of the Marietta First Baptist Church for more than 50 years, where she also volunteered to help with youth choir activities. A Graveside Funeral Service will be held Friday, October 30th at 2:00 pm at Cheatham Hill Memorial Park in Marietta with Dr. Charles Sineath officiating. We were blessed to know and love Gladys Kirby, and so in lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the First Baptist Church of Marietta at 148 Church Street, Marietta, GA 30060 or LiveSAFE Resources at 48 Henderson Street, Marietta, GA 30064, where others may continue to be blessed by her life and legacy.
