James Thomas Manning

James Thomas Manning, lovingly known as “Papa” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, passed away July 27, 2025, reunited at last with his beloved wife, Jessica “Jess” Manning. A love story that began in first grade and never truly ended. Now, they celebrate together, just as he always hoped, and he can tell her once more, “I’ll love you forever.” A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, James was a man of quiet strength, deep love, and unwavering work ethic. He spent many years as a skilled brick mason before retiring from Days Chevrolet, where he served faithfully in the Parts Department. Even after retirement, James remained a tireless worker, building a home in “the country,” as the grandkids called it, with Jess, where they made countless cherished memories. The country became his happy place—hunting, fishing, feeding the deer, bush hogging and mowing acres of grass, and even 'working for Jess' in their large vegetable garden brought him pure joy. His favorite place was the front porch, where he welcomed friends and family with a warm smile, long conversations, and a seat at the table. No one left hungry, and everyone left feeling loved. Though he was a shy soul, Papa had a quick wit and a gentle, dry sense of humor that could catch you off guard—in the best way. Whether it was a perfectly timed one-liner or a playful grin that said more than words ever could, his humor brought so much joy to those lucky enough to know him well. James found his greatest happiness when his house was full of “his people.” He lit up when the grandkids came to visit for the weekend. He loved getting out and shooting clays and fishing with the kids and nothing pleased him more than sharing his little piece of heaven with those he loved most. James loved with his whole heart—quietly, deeply, and without reservation. He leaves behind a legacy of unwavering devotion, quiet strength, and enduring love that will never be forgotten. Though words can’t capture how deeply he’ll be missed, we will carry him with us in every slow front porch conversation we have, every Braves game we watch, and in every bowl of ice cream savored. But above all, we are profoundly blessed to have been his. James is preceded in death by his best friend and wife, Sarah Jessica Manning and brother, Robert E. Manning. He is survived by his two daughters, Dana Day and her husband, Marshal, Ashley Dorsey and her husband, Robert; granddaughters, Sarah Driskell, Sydney Dorsey, Samantha Briggs and her husband, Daniel, Kellyn Mitchell and her husband, Maddux; great-grandchildren, Ashlynn Driskell, Easton Driskell, Charlotte Mitchell, and Wesley Briggs on the way. James is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Joyce Manning and Phyllis Smith and brother-in-law, Baldwin Fears; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Thursday, July 31st from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Mayes Ward Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta. Thursday would have marked James and Jessica's 65th wedding anniversary. Now they are celebrating together, reunited in a way James had longed for since her passing just over a month ago. Their love story continues, and this day becomes not just a tribute to his life, but to their life together. A private family graveside will follow.
