Jean Weaver Somerlot, “Jeanie”, departed for her true Home in Heaven with her Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, March 6, 2024. When the subject of an “obituary conveying details of her life” was ever broached with our dear Mother, her hope was expressed as “it should be very short, with these words: To God be the Glory”… Jean was born in Warren, Ohio on February 23, 1935. She later lived in Toronto, Ohio for most of her childhood. Her God-given musical ministry was discovered at a very young age. She loved to share how God always included other “angels” beside her in her musical path for serving Him all the way from childhood. After graduating from West Liberty University, she began a teaching career, alongside a continued service in the church musically. From piano, to organ, to vocal, to choral, to accompanying, to being a soloist before orchestras, she lived out a “life’s song” for following God’s leading her path. While residing in Phoenix, Arizona, serving as a teacher, Jean met the true love of her life, Dr. Warren Somerlot, Sr. Their love story began with her serving as the organist of Warren’s and Jean’s dearest friends’ wedding. (Warren was the best man!) Their “life’s song together” led them to settle in Marietta, Georgia. Although they both were Ohio Buckeyes, they spent most of their married life raising their family in Georgia. Their children and extended family were blessed immeasurably for their example for living love as the “overflow of our Lord’s cup”. Their shared extraordinary gift of service together celebrates hospitality expressed from their home, to the communities where they were: the arts, schools, faith, medical, and beyond. As shepherding parents, they sought to live by example especially through loving kindness, care, compassion, generosity and creativity. Jean’s supportive and shepherding presence was found with organizations that supported Warren’s medical service, her children’s school and arts pursuits, as well as her other pursuits with the Atlanta Thursday Morning Music Club, the Kennesaw State University Music Department, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Choral Guild of Atlanta, the Atlanta Boy Choir, the Cobb County Symphony, the Cobb Arts Council, the Lillian Bennett Sullivan Singing Ensemble, along with numerous singing ensembles and churches. Whether the spotlight was shining on her on a stage performing, or she was playing hymns during Covid lockdown in her senior community residence, Jean always sought to “make a joyful noise to the Lord” wherever He placed her. She wanted everyone to know how the gift of music was His gift for sharing, but all of us have the gift that comes from Him that shines forth from within: His Love. We rejoice for her shared love with family, her husband, her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, “friends who are family”, and every person that crossed her path. To God Be the Glory!
