Lorraine "Lorie" Ellen Rowan

Lorraine Ellen Rowan (Lorie) (born Lorie Skopinski), 64, of Acworth passed away peacefully on Friday, April 7, 2017 after fighting a long and debilitating illness. Lorie was born in Virginia Beach, VA, and grew up with her 6 brothers and sisters in the NASA community of Seabrook, Texas during the exciting “Space Race” of the 60’s. She attended and graduated from Seabrook High School, where she participated in cheerleading and was recognized by her peers as “Most Beautiful” in her class. After high school, Lorie enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority and met her husband, and life-long partner, Mike Rowan, on a blind date on October 4, 1972. ‘Row’ and ‘Sko’, as they were known, were married on June 20, 1974. Following a brief teaching career, Lorie took on and excelled in the most important of roles, which was staying home and completely dedicating herself to providing a loving environment for her three children, Mike, Amanda, and Tom. The Rowan’s lived in Plano, Texas from 1975-1983 and had a brief stop in Edmond, Oklahoma before settling down for good in Acworth, GA in 1985. During that time, Lorie had a full life, with many passions and hobbies, including being an avid supporter of her children’s sports during their youth, bird watching, cheering for the Texas Longhorns and Atlanta Braves, taking on the challenge of a new crossword puzzle, and never missing an opportunity to take on her loved ones in a competitive match of “Words with Friends”. Later in life, she was overjoyed to serve the role as the beloved ‘Mimi’ to her 6 grandchildren and helping to spoil several grand-dogs over the years. Lorie is survived by her husband, Mike Rowan; children, Mike Rowan, Jr. (wife, Vivian; son, Brendan and daughter-to-be, Marion), Amanda Wyatt (husband, Art Wyatt; son, Campbell and daughter, Peyton), and Tom Rowan (wife, Katrina; sons, Drew and Daniel); brothers, Randy Skopinksi, Bob Skopinski and Ted Skopinski; sisters, Vickie Degeyter, Mary Wright, and Teresa Henderson (deceased). A Memorial Service will be held to celebrate her life on Saturday, April 22 at 5 pm in the Chapel of Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta, followed by a reception afterwards. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
