Margaret Mitchell Fincher

On Sunday September 13, 2020, Margaret Mitchell Fincher 83, went home to be with her Lord and Savior. Margaret was born and raised in East Point, Georgia. She was named after her relative Margaret Mitchell, the author of “Gone With the Wind”. She attended Russell High School, where she participated in many activities, to include: Girls Varsity Tennis, Basketball, and Badminton teams. She was also the class secretary and participated in several other clubs and organizations. After graduation, she auditioned and accepted a contract with “Holiday on Ice” and enjoyed being part of their program. After her stint with “Holiday on Ice”, she became heavily involved with White Oak Hills Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher, member of the choir, led the Drama Club, and chaperoned a number of mission trips throughout the country with the Youth Ministry. Margaret was employed by International Harvester/Navistar International Farming Equipment from 1956 – 2001. During her time there, she was known to read her Bible while eating lunch in the lounge. Many employees observed this and inquired about her faith. She was always open and willing to share not only her love for the Lord, but inspirational books and devotions as well. She found out later just how many fellow employees had accepted Christ as their Savior and spoke about how her influence had changed their lives. Margaret truly had a servant’s heart and always sought to help others. Her hobbies included: painting/drawing, tennis, fishing, hunting, and horseback riding. She was an avid gardener who loved the outdoors and was quoted as saying “I would rather work in my yard than do house work any day”. She loved movies and TV shows about the “old west” and always wanted to live there. In the 1970’s she was able to visit Montana, a dream long realized. Upon retirement in 2001, she concentrated on being a grandmother to grandsons, Ethan and Clayton. She continued to garden, enjoyed antique shopping, attending various festivals, reading her Bible and attending Mount Paran Church. She loved Christmas and was famous for her Christmas fudge and other Christmas goodies. She also enjoyed picnicking at Stone Mountain on holidays, especially Memorial Day. She was very proud of her grandsons and their call to serve in law enforcement and the military. In her later years, Margaret continued to share her faith with neighbors, relatives and friends. She loved the Lord and always wanted to help people in their time of need. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Margaret is survived by her daughter and son in law, Bill and June Smith of Monroe, GA ; devoted daughter and caretaker Janice Fincher of Atlanta; grandsons Ethan and Clayton Smith; brother Sidney Mitchell (Michigan); sister Rebecca Mitchell (Douglasville, GA); niece Kelly Mitchell; and nephew Rich McClain; and other family members in Griffin, GA. A graveside service will be held in honor of Margaret on Friday September 18, 2020 at 12:00 pm. Due to the Covid -19 restrictions, the service will be limited to immediate family members only.
