Martha "Marty" Hagood

Martha (Marty) James Hagood died Sunday, August 17, 2008, after a long battle with Alzheimer ’s Disease. She was born in Summerville, Georgia on April 15, 1943. She was the only child of Willis Samuel James and Lola Beatty James. Marty grew up in Summerville and graduated from Summerville High in 1961. She attended Emory University where she was treasurer of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and received her B.A. degree in mathematics in 1965. While at Emory she met her husband, Felton, and they were married shortly after her graduation. After completing his surgical training in 1974, Felton moved the family back to Marietta to start his surgical practice. Marty loved Marietta and quickly became active in community, church and school activities. She was a devoted wife and mother, making sure her three sons all received an excellent education. There were two great tragedies in Marty’s life – the death of her mother in 1983 and the early onset of Alzheimer’s Disease in 1996. She recovered from her mother’s death and continued her active life. She was a sustaining member of the Cobb-Marietta Junior League, president of the Cobb County Medical Society Alliance in 1992-93, an active member of the Laurel Heritage Garden Club and played on an ALTA tennis team at the Marietta Country Club. Unfortunately, the progression of her Alzheimer’s Disease robbed Marty of many of the joys of her later life. She fought the disease to the end, remaining a kind and loving lady throughout her illness. Her sweet smile will be missed by all. Mrs. Hagood is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Dr. M. Felton Hagood; sons, Gregory F. Hagood and wife, Shannon, of Atlanta, GA, Dr. Robert M. Hagood and wife, Julie, of Dallas, TX, Richard J. Hagood and wife, Evelyn, of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Matt, Will and Caroline Hagood of Atlanta, GA, and Johnathan and Ryan Hagood of Dallas, TX; her father and stepmother, Willis and Rosemary James of Summerville, GA. The family gives special thanks to her longtime caregivers, Sarah Wynn and Gail Turner. Service will be 2 p.m., Thursday, August 21, 2008, Lie-In-State 1 to 2 p.m., at First United Methodist Church, Marietta, with Rev. Dr. Sam Matthews and Rev. Sam Storey, Sr., officiating. Interment will be in Mt. View Park Cemetery, Marietta.
