Mary Jo Brooks Davis

Mary Jo Brooks Davis, 78, of Marietta died Tuesday, October 05, 2010. Mary Jo is survived by her son Jeffrey Hugh Davis and daughter, Anne Grice; grandson, Christopher Jordan Davis of Marietta. She was a long time member of the McEachern Methodist Church in Powder Springs. Throughout her years with the church she held various Board positions up to the Lay Leader. She is a past member of the Choir and taught the Children’s Choir. She served on the Building Committee for the Christian Life Center, Treasurer of the Board of Trustees and overseer of the Macland Cemetery. Mary Jo was a long time member and past President of the Marietta Woman’s Club where she received numerous awards and recognition. She was also a member and past President of the Daughters of the Confederacy. Mary Jo graduated from McEachern High School in 1949 and then attended business school in Atlanta. She once worked at Bell Bomber which later became Lockheed Martin. She was a former member of the Cobb County Sheriffs Department. She returned to McEachern High School as a substitute teacher where she was given her famous nickname G.H.O.B. She served as Area Supervisor for the Cobb County Board of Elections for many years and was Precinct Manager prior to that. She also worked at the State Court Clerks office. Mary Jo didn’t mind having her opinion being known as you can tell by the number of letters to the editor of the Marietta Daily Journal that were published. Mary Jo is fifth generation Cobb County, born and raised on Powder Springs Rd. She was related to some of the founding families of Cobb County, the Brooks, Legg, Latimer and Shaw families. She was a local history buff and spoke to various groups about the history of South West Cobb County. She also researched and taught classes on the history of our local churches. Her love of music was undeniable. She once had a radio show on W.F.O.M. where she would play the piano and sing with various gospels groups traveling through the area. Miss Georgia was once a guest on her show. Mary Jo also had a chance to sing with the Atlanta Symphony and Chorus. Mary Jo was a loving Mother and a loyal friend. She will be missed by many. The family will receive guests on Wednesday, October 6th from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home, 180 Church Street, NE, Marietta, GA 30060. (770)428-1511. Memorial Services will be held 2:00 pm October 7, 2010 at the McEachern Methodist Church in Powder Springs, GA. Interment will be at the Brooks family cemetery at Macland and Powder Springs Road in Marietta.
