Roberta Ann Greenfield

On Saturday January 11, 2025 our beloved mother, sister, aunt and grandmother, Roberta Ann Greenfield, passed away to go home to be with the Lord in Heaven. Known as “Bobbi”, “Miss Bobbi”, ”Aunt Bobbi” and more importantly as “Mee Maw”, she lived a full 87 years and served her family, friends and community with compassion, dignity and love throughout her life. Born to William and Grace Hartsough on November 9, 1937 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania she passed away unexpectedly but peacefully surrounded by family. The Hartsough family would eventually live in Walkersville, Maryland. Roberta (now the eldest of what would become her five siblings) would graduate as class President from Walkersville High School in 1955. From there she would enlist in the United States Air Force where she served her country and would eventually meet Richard Dean Greenfield, fall in love and marry on her 20th birthday in 1957. As a military couple they would be transferred to Charleston, South Carolina where a year later in January of ‘59 she would give birth to her first son Terry Lee; followed a year later by the birth of her second son Patrick Clark in 1960. She would be honorably discharged from the Air Force where she would devote her time building their family. Eventually they would be transferred to the island of Maui, Honolulu, Hawaii where she would give birth to their last son, Richard Dean Jr. in 1963. Again transferred, this time to the small town of Mascoutah, Ill., Bobbi would plug herself and her family into the community and the Catholic church. In 1968 her husband would be sent to the war in Vietnam and she would do as military wives are often called upon to do; raise her three boys, alone, even taking a part-time job at a local department store in town to supplement their income. This she did stoically and never complained. They would live in Mascoutah until 1971 where they would be transferred (for the last time) to Dobbins Air Base in Marietta, Ga. Again, she would excitedly begin to set up a new home and life for her husband and children, this time knowing that it would be for good. As her children grew older she began to explore options for her own future and decided to return to school, enrolling in Kennesaw Junior College to become a teacher in special education, focusing on the needs of mentally and physically handicapped children. Upon graduating and interning at various local schools she would begin her career teaching at Rose Garden school in Smyrna, Ga. Often times juggling the needs of her immediate family and the needs of her school family, she would bring some of her students home to spend weekends with her husband and boys. By doing so she would demonstrate to her sons humility and patience. Her compassion was limitless, as was her desire for knowledge as she enrolled at West Georgia College to continue her education and eventually receive her Masters Degree in Education. She would learn sign language which would become another avenue for her compassion; interpreting and teaching sign would sustain her in her retirement years. In the 1980’s her first grandchild was born: Joshua Tulley, followed through the years by Jordan Thane, Emily Dale, Katie-Mae Louise in 1998 and in the 2000’s welcoming Hannah Estelle and Abigail Elizabeth (Abbey). And to her great delight in 2012 her great grandson Oliver James. “Mee-Maw” loved and adored her grandchildren often spoiling them with every fiber of her being. They too loved and adored her. Bobbi is survived by her sons Terry (and wife Susan), Pat (and wife Shannon) and Richy (and wife Nicole); her sisters Cecilia May Stottlemyer (Ceil) and husband Scotty, Francis Carol Phillips (Frannie), Susan Marie Martin (Susy) and husband Danny and brother William Edward Hartsough II (Billy) and wife Nila; her great grandchild, grandchildren and her many, many nieces and nephews; and Maggie, her four legged companion who always stayed by her side. She is preceded in death by her sister Grace Ellen Bush (Mick); brother-in-law Gerald Phillips (Jerry) and by her husband Richard (Dick) in 2003. She never remarried, focusing on her independence (which she fiercely protected). Bobbi loved sports (Falcons, Braves and her beloved Georgia Bulldogs). She loved to play volleyball. She loved to vacation with her sisters where they would sing 3 part harmonies (with 5 of them!) of old 40’s and 50’s tunes on the beach. She loved helping people, being involved in her community, teaching and watching her grandchildren grow. She loved to laugh and had a keen Irish sense of humor. She loved her church and her God, volunteering (St.Vincent DePaul, Special Olympics; the Suicide Prevention hotline) in the name of both to serve people less fortunate or in great trouble. She was a gift to us and to all who knew her. She will be greatly missed and never replaced. The time has come for her to stand before Jesus and hear Him proclaim to her: “Come unto me, Come unto me, My good and faithful servant. You have served Me well.”
