Thelma Grace Battle O'Hara

Thelma Grace Battle O’Hara, 94, passed away August 17, 2015, following a full and happy life. ‘T’ as she was known to many family and friends, was born and raised in Augusta, GA. She was the eldest daughter of the late Thelma Clyde Johnson Battle, homemaker, and John Francis Battle, Jr. who served as a city editor for the Augusta Herald-Chronicle prior to his retirement. She was a graduate of Mount St. Joseph and Tubman High School. Thelma was married to her sweetheart, the late Lt. Col. Richard ‘Dick’ Kiernan O’Hara, Sr., for 62 years until his death in 2004. As an Air Force wife, Thelma and family lived in various locations across the US and overseas including The Philippines and England. During that time she often packed her household and family on short notice to start a new adventure at the next air base. She enjoyed military life and was an enthusiastic member of the Officers’ Wives’ Club, a non-profit organization serving military families. As a member of the Club she held several offices and leadership roles over the years. She was a devoted, participating parent wherever her four children were in school. “T” worked at the Marietta Daily Journal in the early 1970s, and enjoyed time with girlfriends playing golf and bridge. She particularly liked duplicate bridge. Thelma and Dick were very active members of the 8th Air Force Historical Society and were fond of entertaining friends and family in their home. In addition to her parents and husband, Thelma was predeceased by a sister, Mary Ann Battle, and brother, Donald Edward Battle. She is survived by a sister, Catherine Louise Battle Day, a brother, John Francis Battle, III and her children, Patricia O’Hara Fleming, Richard Kiernan O’Hara, Jr, Maureen O’Hara Luke (Ken) and Michael Battle O’Hara (Ben), granddaughters, Kiernan Fleming Kutasinski (David), Stephanie Ellison Luke and Emily Elizabeth Luke, and her great-grandson, Nolan David Kutasinski. She also leaves many nieces and nephews and their children. There will be a private graveside service.
