Thomas Condra Tabor

Thomas Condra Tabor passed from this life and into the arms of our Lord on May 21, 2024, at the age of one hundred and a half years of age. He died peacefully at his home in Marietta, Georgia with his loving wife Evelyn McArthur Tabor by his side and surrounded by family. Tom was born on November 5, 1923, in Miami, Florida to Charles Condra Tabor of Cartecay, Georgia, and Bernice Molly Barbare of Greer, South Carolina. Mr. Tabor is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Charnice Tabor, his brother Dr. Charles Gordon Tabor, and his eldest daughter, Gail Tabor Johnson. Tom is survived by his wife of nearly 75 years, Evelyn McArthur Tabor, his son, William Thomas Tabor (Orlando, FL), and daughters Sandra Tabor Johnson (Marietta, GA) and Cherie Tabor Campbell (Atherton, CA). Tom was a grandfather and great-grandfather to eleven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and a beloved uncle and great-uncle. He was cherished by all who knew him. Following his father's death in 1933, Tom’s family relocated to High Point, North Carolina . Tom attended High Point High School, where he was on the tennis team. After his graduation, Tom worked as a mechanic to support his mother and family, until he entered the Navy in 1944. In the Second World War, Tom served his country as a machinist’s mate in San Diego, California. He instructed mechanics in maintaining the landing craft used in the Pacific theater. Tom was honorably discharged at the war's conclusion, after which he returned to Georgia to pursue his education at Georgia Tech. Midway through his undergraduate, he met Evelyn McArthur at Cartecay United Methodist Church. The couple was married on June 18, 1949. Tom earned his degree in industrial engineering at Georgia Tech in 1950, after which he began his career at Lockheed in Marietta, Georgia. His career at Lockheed would span thirty-five years, and Tom and Evelyn settled their new family in Marietta in 1951. They moved to their present home in 1960 and have lived there ever since. Tom's work on the C5-A program with Lockheed brought him and his young family to London. They took a home in Surrey in 1967. Tom and his family also lived abroad in Tehran, Iran while he served as a consultant with the Imperial Iranian Air Force. The deposition of the Shah in 1979 forced Tom to be evacuated aboard a C-130 alongside other American expatriates. During his time abroad, Tom and Evelyn discovered a passionate love of travel that he would share and foster within his family. Throughout his lifetime, Tom and Evelyn visited over 127 countries worldwide, returning to England several times. Beginning in 1950, Tom began to use his free time to invest in real estate. In the 1970s, he formalized his real estate business by creating Tabor Properties and getting his real estate broker’s license. Although much of his free time was spent managing his properties, Tom always prioritized his Christian faith. Tom Tabor has been a member of Marietta First Baptist Church for over sixty years. He held many offices in the church, serving as a Sunday school teacher, superintendent of MFB Sunday School, and a deacon. His faith brought him to actively support the Baptist Missionaries, including his brother, who was a Baptist medical missionary in Korea and Macau. Tom was also a thirty-third-degree Mason and an active member of the Marietta Garden Club. Tom loved to spend time on his roses. He also enjoyed singing, woodworking, drawing, and photography. He was an active man until his health began to decline around age ninety-five. He set a goal to live to one hundred years of age and he exceeded it, The funeral will be held at Mayes Ward-Dobbins on Saturday, June 1st at 10:00. The burial will be held the same day at 1:30 at Cartecay Methodist Church in Ellijay, GA.
